The specific pictures of the Annunciation used in The Mary Project were painted by great artists from the 13th century to the 20th century. My intention in creating this project is to draw attention to these beautiful works of art and, in particular, to the way Mary was painted in them. I offer these images and ideas as a tribute to the artists.
The earliest Marys I copied are from Annunciations done by Giotto and Duccio in the 13th century.
Seven of my Marys come from Annunciations painted in the 20th century. The most recent three are from Raphael Soyer, Thomas Esmond Lowinsky, and John Waterhouse.
